Special to the OBSERVER

Fredonia State's winning streak ended Saturday with a rainy 2-1 home loss to Brockport in SUNYAC men's soccer at University Stadium.

The Blue Devils, winners of their last two games, allowed one goal in each half - both by Kevin Dorn - before cutting their deficit in half on a penalty kick by Tyler Williams in the 80th minute.

Despite several good chances in the final 10 minutes, the Blue Devils were unable to put the equalizer past Brockport goalkeeper Casey Sullivan. He finished with six saves. Mike Schreiner made three saves for Fredonia State.

Brockport broke on top in the 32nd minute, as Ryan Phillips took a hard, low shot from about the 18-yard box. Dorn, stationed a few yards ahead inside the box, deflected the ball and the slight misdirection eluded Schreiner.

Dorn's second goal came in the 73rd minute. After a long pass upfield, he slid a wide-angle shot from the left wing at Schreiner. The wet ball slipped through the keeper's hands.

Williams's penalty kick for a goal, his second in two days, was set up when a Brockport defender received a yellow card while players for both teams were jostling for a ball volleyed into the box. The official time of the goal was 79:21.

The game began in a light rain which developed in a heavy shower several times during the afternoon.

Next on the Blue Devil schedule is a non-conference match Wednesday at Westminster (Pa.).

Women's Soccer

Lopsided first half favors Brockport over Devils

BROCKPORT - Fredonia State gave up goals early and often Saturday in a 5-1 SUNYAC women's soccer loss to Brockport.

The Golden Eagles scored all five goals in the first half, including three by Fredonia native Vanessa Gillette, to improve to 7-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC.

"We defended terribly today," Fredonia State coach Chris Case said. "We gave up a goal in the first minute of the game. We never once got it together today, at least not in the first half."

Maria Green scored on a penalty kick at 60:46 as the Blue Devils - ranked No. 22 nationally at the start of the week - fell to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

"We didn't have a great weekend of soccer," Case added. "We gave up seven goals. Through our first six games we have up three I think."

Gillette scored her goals at second, 26th, and 37th minute. The Golden Eagles also scored in the 13th and 34th minute.

Next up for Fredonia State is a trip to Buffalo State next Friday.
