SUNSET BAY - It was a busy season in Sunset Bay, according to officials.
Sheriff Joseph Gerace said the nice weather attracted a lot of people to the popular beach location.
"We had another busy year in Sunset Bay," he said. "This year was consistent with past years. It was a very busy Memorial Day weekend because of the good weather. This year was similar to other good-weather summers. It is a very busy place especially during weekends and holidays."
He said the Sheriff's Department responded to 378 calls in Sunset Bay from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
"We made a number of arrests for everything from open container violations to disorderly conduct to DWIs, assaults, domestics, harassment, larcenies," he explained. "We had numerous calls typical of the party crowd in the bay. Because of the good weather this summer there were a lot of people in the Bay and although they are generally well behaved some people don't obey the law."
Gerace mentioned the summer started out heated with a non-fatal stabbing in one business' parking lot in late May.
However, Hanover Town Supervisor Todd Johnson said it was a good year overall in the bay.
"We started in April cleaning up the beaches, readying the boat launch, cleaning out the ditches and completing road work before the crowds come into the bay," he said. "The incidents that occurred were isolated. People seemed to have a good time."
He said there were very few complaints from residents this year and the town will continue to work to make the Sunset Bay season go by smoothly.
