Fredonia gives SW a close call

The Fredonia Lady Hillbillies (7-2, 5-2) put in a valient effort, but in the end, came up short to the undefeated Southwestern Lady Trojans (11-0, 7-0), 3-2, Monday in CCAA Division 1 girls' high school tennis.

Fredonia's Baylee Tarnowski took second singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Heidi Mueller. The Lady Hillbillies' only other win came in second doubles as Cheyanne Gifford and Sarah Zinni defeated Daisie Bancroft and Leigh Yartz, 6-4, 6-1.

"I thought the girls played very well," Fredonia coach Mike Hirschbeck said. "We just couldn't get the third point."

Fredonia looks to get back into the win column Wednesday when it travels to Dunkirk.

Gowanda 3, Jamestown 2

JAMESTOWN - Jessica Sowa's victory in her first singles match propelled Gowanda (3-4) to a 3-2 win over Jamestown, Monday in CCAA Division 1 girls tennis.

Sowa narrowly defeated Jamestown's Abby Whistner, 7-5, 7-5 in a great matchup of each team's No. 1.

Kelsey Herniman also earned a point for Gowanda with her 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Kim Lindquist in third singles.

"Jessica and Kelsey were both able to make some clutch shots with the match on the line," Gowanda coach Andy Bobscine said."

The Lady Panthers' final victory came courtesy of the first doubles team of Brittney Stelley and Alayna Swartz. The duo downed Morgan Deppas and Olivia Valone, 6-3, 6-0.

"Brittney and Alayna put on an impressive performance," Bobscine added.

Gowanda doesn't get a respite as it hosts Olean today.
