Learning Center to offer TABE testing

The Erie 2 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES Cen-tral Avenue Community Learning Center in Dunkirk will offer Test of Basic Adult Education appointments on Thursdays, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

The test is required for those looking to enroll in BOCES GED program at the CACLC. Testing will be done by appointment only, and seats are limited. Those interested are encouraged to make an appointment as soon as possible.

Cassadaga Branch Library Association meets today

The Cassadaga Branch Library Association meets today at 3 p.m. at June Woollett's, 441 Concord Estates community room, Fredonia. New members are welcome.

Gas prices fall

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 2.7 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $4.03/g Sunday. This compares with the national average that has fallen 4.3 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.81/g, according to gasoline price website RochesterGasPrices.com.

Jeff Diers to appear on Senior Report

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Jeff Diers as the guest on Saturday's television program. Diers is the Chautauqua County watershed coordinator.

The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.

The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the hour-long program devoted to the featured guest. The guest is subject to change.

Senior Report is shown live on Saturday mornings on Time Warner cable systems covering the following communities: Brocton, Cassadaga, Chautauqua, Fredonia, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. In Dunkirk, Forestville, Hanover, Irving and Silver Creek the program is on channel 19.

Route 5 between Van Buren and Willow roads to be closed beginning Wednesday

The New York State Department of Transporta-tion announced that a culvert replacement project will begin Wednesday in the town of Dunkirk. As a result, Route 5 will be closed in both directions between Willow and Van Buren roads starting Wed-nesday. A posted detour will direct traffic to use Route 60, Route 20 and Route 394. This work is expected to last for about three weeks.

This work is weather sensitive and may be delayed in the event of inclement weather.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual's driver's license.

Silver Creek open houses scheduled

Silver Creek elementary school will hold its open house Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The middle/high school open house will be held Oct. 11 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Saturday steak fry to benefit the American Cancer Society

A steak fry will be held Saturday from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the Kosciuszko Club, 252 Nevins St., Dun-kirk. Tickets are $15 each or 2 for $25 and available at Matt's News or at the door. Dinners are available for eat in or take out. There will also be a silent auction and 50/50 raffle. Left of Center will provide music at 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Kosciuszko Club and the Paper Factory Relay for Life team. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

Suhr's pole vault to air this week

Channel 5 in Fredonia will re-broadcast Jenn Suhr's 2012 world-best pole vault today, Wednesday and Thursday at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
