Twenty years ago - 1992

Sammi Steel has announced a major restructuring that involves the elimination of 410 jobs at its Atlas Specialty Steel plant in Welland, Ont., and another 125 jobs at its AL Tech Specialty Steel plant in Watervliet near Albany. Only one or two jobs will be eliminated at the AL Tech plant in Dunkirk. Although the Dunkirk facility may have escaped the brunt of the current cuts, only an ongoing effort to become more competitive will stem future job losses at the facility, according to James Mintun Jr., chairman of Sammi's North American Operations.

Thirty years ago - 1982

Champy was appearing with Wyoming Jack Hayes, a popular rodeo rider, during "Frontier Days" at the Dunkirk-Fredonia Plaza in August 1961.

Forty years ago - 1972

Irv Weinstein, news director at WKBW-TV (Channel 7) in Buffalo, will be the guest speaker at the upcoming kickoff luncheon for the United Way of Northern Chautauqua County campaign.

Fifty years ago 1962

Russell Frey has announced that he has purchased Card's Restaurant at 22 West Main St., Fredonia and plans alterations. Included will be an addition at the rear of the building and a rear entrance.
