Bob joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a machine gunner in the Korean Conflict. He was wounded in combat, receiving the Purple Heart. He attained the rank of Sergeant, was an instructor and sharpshooter award recipient.

Returning home, he became a union member of the Carpenters Local #276 until his retirement. Bob was also a lifetime member of the Cassadaga Fire Department, where they honored his years of service with a 50-year recognition award.

He enjoyed sports, including playing baseball for many years in the county Grape Belt league for Cassadaga, Stockton and Cherry Creek. He loved watching his beloved Yankees play whenever they were on.

An avid outdoorsman, he spent many days hunting, fishing and trapping. A highlight of his year would be hunting deer with the Milk House Hunting Club of Cassadaga.

In retirement, in addition to hunting, Bob traveled extensively across the country. He often joined the 76ers of Sinclairville for lunch. Always generous, he enjoyed making and giving fresh bread to the members.

Bob had a great love for life and all he did, he did to the fullest.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Elaine.

Bob met and married Irene Goot while attending the 76ers. While their times together were too short and few, they greatly enjoyed each other's company. Bob loved her three sons, Merle Jr., Steve and Rex and her seven grandchildren.

Victory celebration is at St. Paul Lutheran Church Saturday, Oct. 6 at 10:00 a.m. followed by military burial at Cassadaga Cemetary.
