WNYSPA award winners announced

October 7, 2012
The OBSERVER

The Western New York School Press Association's annual Media Day conference for high school journalists will once again be held in the Williams Center at SUNY Fredonia, with Frank LoMonte, the executive director of the Student Press Law Center, tentatively scheduled to give the keynote address on current developments in press law, according to director WNYSPA Director Lisa Reinhardt.

"I wanted to let Western New York school publication advisers know that we are having the conference in the newly-renovated facility on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 from 8:45-1:30 p.m., which is what we have been doing for several years," Reinhardt said. "Last spring we held the conference in McEwen and Cranston halls in May, which is usually a difficult time of year for students and teachers to be on a field trip. We still had a great turnout for the event and the college was again instrumental in ensuring that things ran smoothly."

More than 125 student journalists from seven Western New York schools attended last spring's 31st annual conference where students are able to meet and learn from some of the area's journalists. Denise Jewell Gee, a weekly columnist for the City & Region section of The Buffalo News, gave the keynote address, From Notebooks to Video Cameras: How Technology is Changing the Job of Reporting. Following the keynote address, awards were given to the student journalists for their work at their respective school newspapers.

The fall adviser planning meeting will be held Saturday, October 13. Any adviser wishing to attend and learn more about the conference and organization can contact Reinhardt at reinhardt3@hotmail.com or at 716-679-8915 for more information.
