Both Ripley and Westfield School Board members came out strongly in favor of the annexation of the two school districts at a public hearing held recently. Although initially the Westfield board saw little advantage financially to annexing with Ripley, the recent increase from 20 to 40 percent of incentive aid for consolidating districts made the proposed annexation more attractive for Westfield. About 100 Ripley and Westfield residents attended the hearing.

Thirty years ago - 1982

The Dunkirk Common Council unanimously agreed upon the name Millard Fillmore Drive for the new road through the D&F Plaza parking lot. The Dunkirk Historical Society recommended the name as a way to honor the nation's 13th president who was a native of western New York.

Forty years ago - 1972

The distinction of Fellow has been bestowed on Dr. Alfred D. Heinemann of Dunkirk by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Fifty years ago 1962

Paul Napper, a 19-year-old farm youth from Westfield, won the Eastern U.S. 4-H tractor operators' contest with the best score ever recorded in the 12-year history of the event.
