Man struck by train in Ripley

October 10, 2012
The OBSERVER

RIPLEY - A Ripley man was injured Tuesday night when he was struck by a train on South State Street.

Timothy R. Luke Jr., 23, of Ripley was injured while crossing the railroad tracks. At 9:05 p.m. Luke was crossing the railroad tracks from the north side walking toward the south east. As Luke was crossing the railroad tracks, trains were approaching on both the CSX and Norfolk-Southern tracks from the west.

A witness to the incident indicated the crossing gates were operational at the time of the incident.

As Luke crossed the railroad tracks, it appears he did not notice the Norfolk-Southern train on the southern set of tracks. As he stepped off of the tracks, his left leg was struck by the train, sending him into the air.

He landed clear of the train next to the railroad tracks. He was treated at the scene by Ripley Fire then transported to Hamot Hospital in Erie, Pa., where he was treated for a broken leg.
