50-Plus Seniors
COLLINS - This will be another busy week for 50-Plus Seniors at the L. K. Painter Community Center. The first Tuesday Soup and Sandwich Lunch for the fall season will be held this Tuesday at noon in the Senior Room. Menu will be baked beans, hot dogs, potato chips and dessert. Price remains at $2.50 and pre-registration is required. Call 532-2507 no later than noon on Monday to register or sign up at the center during regular program hours. Cards or Sequence Board Game follow lunch.
Another special event is the Thursday afternoon demonstration of the use of therapeutic oils to eliminate pain, anxiety and sleep. Celeste Chase, assisted by Sharon Swan, will tell participants about the magic of oil for natural healing and health at 1 p.m. in the Senior Room.
Community Service gets under way Friday at 1 p.m., also in the Senior Room. Volunteers are needed to assist in the making of holiday projects for area nursing and residential homes. There will be several items to work on and many hands are needed to get them ready for the Christmas season.
Regular activities for the week are as follows: Indoor Walking and Exercise, a three-part program led by Pat Tucker, is held in the gymnasium Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the gymnasium at 9 a.m. Informal Euchre Game is Monday at 1 p.m., Senior Room.
Gentle Arthritis Exercises is held Tuesday/Thursday at 10 a.m., gymnasium. This hour long chair activity will help increase mobility for those afflicted with arthritis. Open Crafts led by Pat Tucker is at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Senior Room.
Quilting with Florence, a 50-Plus Senior Group, will hold a Quilt Show Friday in the Community Room of Collins Public Library.
A reminder to all card players, the first fall Euchre and Pinochle Card Party will be held Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1:30 p.m. in the center's gymnasium. Cost remains at $5.
Openings are available for the Big Band Christmas Spectacular on Dec. 6 at SUNY Fredonia. Cost is $30 for residents of the towns of Collins, Perrysburg and Persia and $32 for all others. The trip is "a go" and a $10 deposit is due with reservations. Balances are due Nov. 1. Call Joan Byrne, senior program coordinator, 532-2507 to make reservations. Sign-up sheet and flyers are also available in the Senior Room during regular program hours.
The Nov. 13 free AARP Driving Safety Course for veterans and dependents is filled but standbys are being accepted. Call 532-2507 to register or for more information.
Lake Shore Senior Citizens
The Lake Shore Senior Citizens met at the Dunkirk Senior Center at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday. President Barb Barberich led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of "God Bless America."
A reading entitled "God's Wonders" was given by chaplain Loretta Hemink.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the secretary, Loretta Hemink.
They were accepted as read by Jean Kubera with a second by Charlene Hallmark.
The treasurer's report was read by treasurer Carol Kozlowski. It was accepted as read by Sandy Tapasto with a second by Dorothy Kornacki.
Attendance prizes were won by Hemink, Barberich, and Jean Szot.
Helper of the day was Stella Michalak and others who assisted.
The kitchen committee for Oct. 17 is Hallmark and Mary Hayes.
Pioneer Social Club
FORESTVILLE - The October meeting of the Pioneer Social Club was called to order by President Carol Pierce. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Barb Tower, and Norma Stewart said the prayer. Twenty-six members answered to roll call.
The treasurer's and secretary's reports were read with no corrections or additions. A motion was made by Barb Tower to accept both reports; it was seconded by Angie Logan.
"Happy Birthday" was sung to Grace Johnson, June Gostomski, Logan, Henry Kuzora, Vicky Stelmack, Donna Nobles, John Readon, Jerry Bostaph and Arlene Miller.
Miller announced that she will be hosting a 80th birthday open house on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. It will be held at the Union Hall on Cushing Street in Fredonia. All friends are invited, but no gifts - just good wishes and companionship.
Sunshine girl Peg Heiden sent out a sympathy card to the family of the late Susan Franklin.
The food committee for the month of November is Toni Acaria, Marge and Norma Youngberg.
Luncheon tickets were won by Nancy Wilson and Tower. Dorothy Schneider and Norma Steward won the 50/50 drawing. The Riles and Woolley award was won by Acaria.
It was announced that Walter Waligora and the Sheridan VFW Auxiliary gave a very generous donation of priority and first class postage to be used to send out packages of coupons to local military families. Members of the group were asked to continue to clip and hand in useable coupons for the troops. It's a little way to thank military families for what they are sacrificing.
Dorothy Schneider is donating one of her handcrafted, leaded glass decorations to the club. It will then be used by the club as a way to raise money to purchase Christmas gifts for a needy child. The raffle will be discussed further at the next meeting on Nov. 4. The raffle will take place at the annual Christmas dinner and meeting.
Silver Creek Seniors
SILVER CREEK - Silver Creek Seniors met Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m. with 25 members present. President Ed Newman opened the meeting with the pledge to the flag and the singing of "God Bless America." Chaplain Irene Conny presented a prayer "A Song Within My Soul." Minutes were read from the Sept. 25 meeting by Secretary Clara Griffin and were accepted.
Prizes were won by several members. The Hole Parker drawing was won by Corkie Patton.
Lorrie Newman gave her treasurer's report, which was accepted. She also read a few comical stories.
It was brought to members' attention that Jane Park needs prayers, as she is still recovering from an accident, and is at her daughter's home in Hamburg.
The officers for 2013 were installed Tuesday at the Colony Restaurant at a noon luncheon.
October birthdays will be recognized Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Silver Creek Senior Center.
Sinclairville Senior Citizens
SINCLAIRVILLE - The Sinclairville Senior Citizens meet once a month for a luncheon and program. At the recent luncheon, music was provided by John and Joan Risley, who sang a variety of folk songs and love songs. One song included a story about a young man treating his date to a full dinner and having only 50 cents to pay for all. The music was enjoyed and appreciated by all.
President Elaine Palmer-Titus welcomed all with a humorous story about a light being on inside the refrigerator during the night. Prior to the meal, Titus gave the blessing asking for thanks for the day, a blessing on those standing in need, the families who have lost loved ones, and a blessing on the food provided for all. Lunch was a tureen dinner, with many varieties of food. Diman Smith brought his large roaster full of homemade chili. The October festive table decorations were provided by John and Susan Sipos. Smith was thanked for all that he does for this group including making the coffee, getting the serving table ready, bringing the sound system, and getting things ready in the kitchen.
Titus led all in the Lord's Prayer, and Secretary John Sipos gave the history of the Pledge of Allegiance which was said 120 years ago for the first time by millions of school children on the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus arriving in America. The original pledge had 26 words, and more words were added over time to make the 31 now in the pledge. Sipos led the group in the pledge.
Secretary Sipos read the minutes of the previous meeting. Treasurer Claudia Wittenbrook gave the financial report.
Bill Wittenbrook was in charge of drawings. Recipients included Norvale Martin-Gane, Wittenbrook, Tom Alford, Nellie Sharp, Martha Harmon, Betty Wielgasz, Jim Odell, Titus who had money attached to her gift, Susan Sipos, Marge McIntyre, Diane Shaw, Jane Penhollow, John Sipos and Linda Parmenter. Marna Terry Wolaver gave a demonstration of the "Chekhov" method of movement dynamics, identifying an action by movements only.
Wolaver, Susan Sipos and Wieglasz were celebrating their birthdays this month, and there was a birthday cake in their honor. Tommy and Sue Alford were celebrating their anniversary on Oct. 11.
The next meeting of the group will be on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at noon at the Sinclairville Firehall dining room. Table decorations will be provided by Gane and Sis Morley. The meal will be a catered Thanksgiving dinner provided by the Sinclairville Superette.
New members are always welcome.
United Senior Citizens
The United Senior Citizens held their monthly luncheon meeting at the Fredonia Beaver Club with 83 members in attendance.
President Charles St. George introduced Juanita Peters and Dorothy Derby as new members.
St. George opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and Fr. Walter Werbicki gave the invocation.
Lunch followed with a delicious meal of meat loaf, baby red potatoes, bean casserole, salad, and dessert served by Beaver Tail Catering.
The 50/50 winners were Sandy Bain, Dolores Campbell, Derby, Carm Johnson, Nancy Mitchell, Florence Rich, Lucy Saeli, Fr. Werbicki, and Josephine Wierczynski.
The meeting began with thanking the October calling committee, who were Dorothy Hilliker, Mary Lewandowski, Gerri Pomroy, Pat Ebert, Lucille Rizzo and Wierczynski.
The calling committee for the November Thanksgiving luncheon will be Elizabeth Baldwin, Sandy Bain, Hilliker, Ruth White, Shirley Tilburg and Wierczynski.
The October birthdays were Anita Golubski, Ann Spencer, Birdie Walczak, Baldwin, Josephine Christopher (Fredonia), Mickey Colicchia, Tilburg, Vicky Stelmach, Leo Bain, Norma St. George, Ray Halasinkski and Richard Lascola.
The treasurer's report was given by the president and it was announced that there is an opening for a treasurer.
St. George announced that all members of the United Senior Citizens who are veterans would be served a free lunch. He also announced that all members must have their 2013 dues paid by Dec. 1 in order to get the discounted rate of $5 for the Christmas Party.
St. George again entertained the group with his humorous stories. He also mentioned that paying for the lunches in advance would greatly reduced the number of phone calls the calling committee has to make.
Following lunch, Bingo was hosted by Mayme Joy and Carolyn LoGuidice.
The next meeting will be the annual Thanksgiving luncheon on Monday, Nov. 12 at noon. The menu will be roasted turkey with dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, salad, dessert, and coffee. Cost is $7 per person.
