Fredonia receives honorable mention in latest Sportswriters poll

For the second straight week, there were no local teams named in the New York State Sportswriters Association football polls. However, in Class C, Fredonia (5-2) earned honorable mention after getting back on winning track with its 21-14 win over arch-rival Dunkirk.

The Hillbillies (5-2) open the Section 6 Class C playoffs Friday night in Allegany-Limestone (5-2). The Gators were also an honorable mention in this week's poll.

Elsewhere, in Class C, the top five teams remained the same, with Hornell (Sec. 5, 7-0), winners of 46 straight, remaining No. 1. The Raiders were followed again by Hoosksick Falls (Sec. 2, 7-0), Waverly (Sec. 4, 7-0), Chenango Forks (Sec. 4, 7-0), winners of nine straight, and Babylon (Sec. 11, 6-0).

JFK (6-1), which beat Cleveland Hill (5-2) last week to take the top spot in Class C North, was the only Section 6 team ranked in the Class C poll, coming in at No. 19.

The Golden Eagles fell from No. 12 to an honorable mention spot. Also named honorable mention in Class C were St. Mary's of Lancaster (5-2), Salamanca (6-1), winners of Class C South, and Wilson (5-2).

In Class AA, Shaker (Sec. 2, 7-0) moved into the fifth spot behind No. 1 Rush-Henrietta (Sec. 5, 7-0), No. 2 Oceanside (Sec. 8, 6-0), No. 3 Tottenville (PSAL, 6-0), and New Rochelle (Sec. 1, 6-0).

Jamestown (6-1), winners of Class AA South, moved up two spots from No. 12 to No. 10, while Monsignor Martin Association member Canisius (7-0), moved up two spots as well, going from No. 10 to No. 8. Orchard Park (6-1) moved from No. 13 to No. 11 while St. Joe's (6-1) lost to MMA foe Bishop Timon-St. Jude (5-2), 17-14, dropping the Marauders from No. 5 to No. 16. while the Tigers enter this week's poll as an honorable mention.

Frontier (5-2) and Lockport (5-2) were also named honorable mention in Class AA.

In Class A, the top five remained the same, as Lawrence (Sec. 8, 6-0), Harrison (Sec. 1, 6-0), Sweet Home (7-0), Sayville (Sec. 11, 6-0), winners of 18 straight, and Eastridge (Sec. 5, 7-0).

West Seneca East (7-0) came in at No. 10 and Iroquois (6-1) came in at No. 23. McKinley (5-2) which beat then No. 16 Grand Island (6-1), 22-16, moved into the poll at No. 25. The Vikings fell out of this week's poll.

In Class B, Maine-Endwell (Sec. 4, 7-0) remained No. 1 and was followed by Alden (7-0), Chittenango (Sec. 3, 7-0), Geneva (Sec. 5, 7-0) and Our Lady of Lourdes (Sec. 1, 6-0).

Cheektowaga (7-0) remained at No. 8 and Depew (6-1) No. 13 while Burgard (6-1) moved into the top 20, coming in at No. 20. Nichols (6-1), Lewiston-Porter (5-2) and Pioneer (5-2) were all named honorable mention.

Maple Grove (7-0) remained on top of the Class D poll - the fifth-straight week the Red Dragons were ranked No. 1. Following Maple Grove were Tioga (Sec. 4, 6-1), Avon (Sec. 5, 6-1), Cambridge (Sec. 2, 7-0) and Rensselaer (Sec. 2, 7-0). Falling out of the top five were Weedsport (Sec. 3, 6-1), a 14-7 loser to No. 10 Port Byron (Sec. 3, 6-1), and Tuckahoe (Sec. 1, 4-1-1), a 7-0 loser to No. 14 Class C school, Bronxville (Sec. 1, 3-2). Weedsport came in at No. 12 this week while Tuckahoe was ranked No. 8.

Randolph (5-2) was tied at No. 20 with Canajoharie (Sec. 2, 5-1). The top three teams in Class DD, Clymer (6-1), Ellicottville (6-1) and Sherman (6-1) were all named honorable mention this week.
