Meet the Candidates events set

October 19, 2012
The OBSERVER

The League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County invites the public to attend two events to meet the candidates for Chautauqua County Judge and for the New York State Assembly.

Candidates for the Assembly are the incumbent, Andrew Goodell from Jamestown and his challenger, Dr. Rudolph Mueller, from Lakewood.

Candidates for County Judge are the incumbent, John J. Ward, with an office in Mayville, and his opponent, William Coughlin, from Fredonia.

Each event will consist of two sessions, one for the assembly candidates, followed by one for the candidates for judge. Each session will begin with short statements from the candidates, but the rest of each session will be devoted to questions from the audience.

The first event will start at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22 at the Prendergast Library in Jamestown,

This event is co-sponsored by the Jamestown chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

The second Meet the Candidates event will start at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Fredonia Opera House in Fredonia. This event will be broadcast live on local access TV, and listeners at home will be able to call in questions.

As is well known, the League and AAUW time-keepers are strict about keeping the candidates' statements brief so that many members of the audience can ask questions.

Candidates are also encouraged to question one another in true debate form.

In this election, many local issues are at stake, so it is all the more important for voters to inform themselves of the candidates' views and to see the men in action face to face.

Although the presidential election and debates are on many people's minds, local problems are at least equally pressing in our daily lives.

It is to be hoped that both Meet the Candidates forums will attract vocal audiences.

As always, both events are free and open to all.
