Job creation important election issue

October 21, 2012
The OBSERVER

By ROSEMARY BANACH

Our unemployment in Western New York remains unacceptably high and this can be improved upon by national energy focused on independence as endorsed by Congressman Tom Reed.

The country cannot solve our entire financial crisis by borrowing more money and operating "business as usual," as others have proposed, as we will all be in deeper trouble. This country needs to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and more aggressively develop our own resources. We need national policies to develop clean domestic sources of natural gas, particularly to benefit our own Dunkirk NRG plant and sustain our many manufacturing facilities and jobs. More responsible policies are needed relating to further development of other energy sources. We need to lower energy costs to put people back to work and pull ourselves out of this recession.

Too many of our elected officials are good at pointing out problems but fail at providing solutions. Tom Reed supports using our natural gas as a viable solution to a very real problem. At a time when our factories and plants are announcing seemingly endless cuts, layoffs and closures, we need representatives in Congress who are committed to domestic solutions to solve our problems.

Career opportunities in domestic energy with good paying jobs are part of this development. Let's take them!

Rosemary Banach is a Dunkirk resident.
