The Dunkirk Police Department has released the name of the individual killed in a pedestrian-train accident Sunday afternoon.
Steven M. Jewell, 55, of Park Avenue in Dunkirk was hit and killed at 4:14 p.m. Sunday at the Norfolk Southern Railroad crossing located on Main Street.
According to the report issued Monday by Ssergeant Christopher Witkowski, Jewell was walking along the railroad tracks, just west of the Main Street railroad crossing and was struck by a westbound freight train. The train was on time having started from Buffalo heading to Toledo.
After inspection by railroad personnel, it appears that all Norfolk Southern equipment at the crossing and on the train were functioning appropriately and the engineer and conductor followed all procedures properly. The train was travelling within the speed restrictions.
The Dunkirk Police Department reminds the community to obey all railroad signals, gates and alerts. It is a violation of law to go around the activated gates at crossings and a crime to walk along the railroad tracks.
