Batavia 4, NCCYHA Steelers 2 - The Steelers opened the season with a loss to powerhouse Batavia. Nick Walter and Mike Meredith each chipped in goals for the locals while Chris Buchanan and Matt Johnson assisted.
NCCYHA Steelers 4, Monroe County 3 - The Steelers held on for the win as Chris Buchanan (two goals) scored the eventual game winner. Also scoring were Matt Johnson and Devin Drummond. Assists were credited to Meredith and Drummond. Joe Caine earned the win between the pipes.
Depew 5, NCCYHA Steelers 3 - The Steelers couldn't hold on to the lead as Depew rallied in the third for the win. Steeler goal scorers were Matt Johnson (two) and Dawson Rafan. Assists were dished out by Michael Szalkowski (two) and Luke Mleczko.
Buffalo Tournament Club
Wednesday Travel League - Gary Richardson (76) edged Ron Rys (77) by one stroke to win the league's first event held at Buffalo Tournament Club in Lancaster. It was Richardson's fifth victory of the season and included the low back nine score of a 1-over par 37. Rys and Ed Tofil tied for the low front nine score of 38. Tofil and Al Etzel each shot 79 for third place. John Bongiovanni won the B Flight on a tiebreaker over John Waterman. Winner of the Commissioner's Award was Dave "Tin Cup" Franklin.
Untied birdies were recorded by: A Flight - Richardson (Nos. 7, 10, 11 & 16), Etzel (Nos. 8 & 13), Rys (No. 12) and Kerry Murphy (No. 17); B Flight - Dave Miller (Nos. 1 & 16), Bongiovanni (No. 2), Bob Thompson (Nos. 7 & 14), Angelo Leone (No. 8) and Waterman (No. 18). Closest to the pin were Rys (No. 5), Etzel (No. 8), Leone (No. 12) and Pat Weaver (No. 15).
Top point winners were Etzel (34), Rys (26), Richardson (24) and Leone (13). Next week the league is scheduled to play its annual Halloween "Spooktacular" at Chautauqua Golf Club's Hill Course with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Any golfers interested in playing should call Butch Mackowiak (679-4027) to sign up.
Lucky Lanes Senior Bowling
Every Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. a group of senior citizens meets at Lucky Lanes to bowl.
The individuals bowl three games each and there are no set teams, so you can bowl with whomever you like. There are no obligations, so if you can't make it one week, there's no need for substitutions. Bowlers from Dunkirk, Fredonia, Silver Creek, Sheridan, Brocton and all surrounding areas are invited. Bowling shoes are required, but are avaiable at Lucky Lanes for rent.
