November 8, 2012
The OBSERVER

October Rising Star winners were Dennis Odebralski and Valerie Lawson of 55 Genet St. in Dunkirk.

Odebralski upgraded his home's appearance by painting the exterior a deep red with white trim.

After removing overgrown trees and shrubs from the front yard, he then landscaped the property with some new shrubbery.

October Rising Star winners Dennis Odebralski and Valerie Lawson, of 55 Genet St., are pictured with Service Hardware owner Robert Bartkowiak.

Improvements were also made to existing windows, eaves, driveway and fencing along the backyard.

For his efforts, Odebralski will receive a $100 gift certificate to Service Hardware, courtesy of its owner, Robert Bartkowiak.

The Rising Star program was created to promote and recognize city of Dunkirk property owners who make significant exterior improvements to their existing residential homes, which in turn helps to elevate the image of city neighborhoods.

Initiated by First Ward Councilman Mike Michalski, the program has awarded a total of $1,800 to city residents from local area hardware stores over the past three years.

Councilman Michalski would like to thank local Rising Star sponsoring hardware stores Add Lumber, Bargain Outlet, Service Hardware and the Home Depot, as well as the city of Dunkirk Planning Board and city of Dunkirk building inspector's office.

This award will conclude the program for this year.
