Brocton-Portland Seniors
The Brocton-Portland Seniors' October meeting was called to order by President Robin Carr. Art Donovan led the Pledge of Allegiance followed by Chaplain Alberta Blakely giving a prayer and a moment of silence.
The committee of the day was Tom DeJoe, Lena Elliott, Pete and Bonnie Suppo who had decorated all tables with Halloween decorations. Halloween costumes were worn by the majority of members and pictures taken. A Kentucky Fried Chicken dinner with all the trimmings was enjoyed followed by a large buffet of desserts.
President Carr introduced Tom Schmidt, who gave a presentation about the merger of Westfield and Brocton schools. Schmidt held a question and answer session and said the broadcasting system available at the school would be helpful.
Secretary's and treasurer's reports were given and accepted by Rick Cranston and Dottie McQuiggan and approved. Blakely introduced new members Don and Miriam Wilson and they were welcomed by all. A get well card was signed by the membership for Josie Lautenslaker.
"Happy Birthday" was sounded out to Erica Abram and Peter Suppo and 31-year anniversary wishes given to Margaret and Bob Jagoda. Dec. 15 is the wedding date for Bill Norris and Dottie McQuiggan, with best wishes extended by members.
Fred Brown and Cora Patterson won the door prizes. Halloween prizes were won by Rose Giambra, Pat Nixon, Betty Kierczyek and Julia Schrantz. The raffle was won by Betty Kierczyek, Ruth Patterson, Pat Smith, Bonnie Suppo and Bill Norris.
The Christmas Party will be held at St. Stephen's on Monday, Dec. 17. The committee for November will be Mary DeLand, Nixon and Carr.
No Bingo was played due to the long meeting and weather.
The next meeting will be Monday, Nov. 26, at the Nickel Plate Restaurant at noon for a ham dinner, with members paying $5. Those interested in attending should sign up by Nov. 18 with Rita at 792-4565.
Grape Belt Seniors
The Grape Belt Seniors have been very pleased with the response from the community about the two upcoming trips being planned with Wendt Tours. Even though the trips are planned for next May and next September, people have been signing up and putting down their deposits. For more information about the May trip to Lancaster, Pa., or the September trip to Montreal and Quebec City, call 672-5274.
There will be no exercise class on Monday, Nov. 12 because of Veteran's Day. There is a bus trip going to Salamanca Casino that day and there are a few spaces left on the bus. Call 679-1943 right away to make a reservation. There will also be no exercise class on Friday, Nov. 23.
Book club will be meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 10:15 a.m. If anyone has read an interesting book recently that they would like to talk about, come to book club and meet other seniors who like to read and talk about what they've read. For more information, call 679-0001.
This month the board meeting will be on Monday, Nov. 19. Those who have suggestions for the board may call 672-4049.
Blue Cross/Blue Shield will have representatives at the senior center at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 28. Independent Health will have representatives there on Nov. 30.
50-Plus Seniors
COLLINS - The 50-Plus Senior Program's Monday activities are canceled as the L.K. Painter Community Center is closed in observance of Veterans Day. Monday's programs will resume next week. Schedules for both weeks are listed below.
The next and final AARP Defensive Driving class for 2012 will be held Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 9 a.m. in the center's Community Room. Participants are requested to park in the rear parking lot and to bring their driver's license and a pen.
Other activities for the week are: Tuesday and Thursday, Gentle Arthritis Exercises, at 10 a.m., gymnasium; Wednesday and Friday, Indoor Walking and Exercise led by Pat Tucker, 9 a.m., gym. On Wednesday, Quilting with Florence is from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Community Room, Collins Public Library (call Florence Reynolds at 532-3075 to learn more) and Senior Bowling is at 1 p.m. at K & Lanes. Cost is $1.50 per game or three games for $5. No Open Crafts will be held Wednesday as there will be a repeat program on the use of oils for natural healing and health to be presented by Celeste Chase and Sharon Swan, 1 p.m., Senior Room. The Paint on Velvet program with Eleanor Arendt is Friday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m., Senior Room. Cost: $1.50. All supplies provided.
Activities for the week of Nov. 18 are abbreviated as the senior program activities close Nov. 22 and 23 for Thanksgiving. The November Euchre and Pinochle Card party will be held Sunday, Nov. 18, at 1:30 p.m. in the gym. The $5 fee includes cash table prizes and dessert and beverages.
Indoor Walking and Exercises will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday and Wednesday. Informal Euchre game is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m. in the Senior Room. Tuesday activities are: Gentle Arthritis Exercises, 10 a.m., gym, and Senior Soup and Sandwich Lunch, noon, Senior Room. Menu includes vegetable beef soup, egg salad sandwich, dessert and beverages. Cost is $2.50. Reservations are required and must be made by calling 532-2507 no later than noon on Monday. A sign-up sheet is also available in the senior room during program hours. Sequence Board Game is to follow.
Senior Bowling at K & L Lanes is canceled for Wednesday. Quilting with Florence is at 10:30 a.m. at the Collins Library Community Room and Open Crafts is at 1 p.m. in the Senior Room.
The 50-Plus Seniors wish all a happy Thanksgiving.
Lake Shore Senior Citizens
The Lake Shore Senior Citizens met at the Dunkirk Senior Center on Wednesday. President Barb Barberich led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of "God Bless America." A reading entitled "For the Season of Time" was given by Chaplain Hemink.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Secretary Loretta Hemink. They were accepted as read by Charlene Hallmark with a second by Ronnie Ginley. The treasurer's report was read by Treasurer Carol Kozlowski. It was accepted as read by Marion Genovese with a second by Sophia Kubasik.
Attendance prizes were won by Kubasik, first place; Pat Kozlowski, second place; and Barberich, third place. Helper of the day was Stella Michalak, and others assisted. The kitchen committee for Nov. 14 is Pat Kaus and Dorothy Kornacki.
In other news, it was decided that $25 will be donated to the day care center at St. John's Church in Dunkirk. The Christmas party will be held Dec. 19 at the Dog House at 4 p.m. for the Lake Shore Senior Citizens. The cost is $5 per person. Election of new officers will be held the first week in December.
Pioneer Social Club
FORESTVILLE - The Pioneer Social Club meeting was called to order by President Carol Pierce. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Barb Tower and the prayer said by Norma Stewart.
Roll call was taken by Judy Hahn with 26 members answering.
The secretary's report was given by Hahn and the treasurer's report by Marlene Bradigan. Both reports were accepted with no corrections or additions. A motion was made to accept both reports by Angie Logan, seconded by Barb Tower.
"Happy Birthday" was sung for November birthday celebrants Carol Dipirro, Dorothy Merrill and Nancy Wilson.
Sunshine girl Peg Heiden sent a sympathy card out to Ruth Kuehn with the death of her husband. A birthday card was sent out to Grace Johnson, who is a resident at the Heritage Home of Gerry.
The next meeting will be held on Dec. 3, and members were asked to bring in Christmas snacks for refreshments.
The food committee for the month of January 7, 2013 is Wilma Crowell, Dipirro, Hahn and Peg Heiden.
The Christmas party will be held at Tom's Restaurant in Irving on Dec. 13 at 12:30 p.m. The menu choices are chicken souvlaki, beef on weck and stuffed shells. Each member will pay $5, the club will pay the remainder of the cost. The money can be paid at the Dec. 3 meeting.
The lunch drawings were won by Bradigan and Tower. The 50/50 was won by Enebelle Mirando and Dipirro. The Riles and Woolley Award was won by Ruth Kuehn.
Arlene Miller made the motion to nominate officers for the year of 2013. Gertie Syper seconded it. The officers are President Ruth Kuehn, Vice President Dipirro, Secretary Heiden, treasurer will be held jointly by Logan and Bradigan.
The club is now selling tickets on the handmade leaded glass hanging made by Dorothy Schneider. The money raised will be used at Christmas time to help someone of the Forestville area who is in great need. The leaded glass hanging is on display at Evans National Bank, where tickets may be purchased.
Silver Creek Seniors
SILVER CREEK - Silver Creek Seniors met Tuesday, Oct. 30, at the club rooms on Route 5 for a Halloween pizza party with 23 members present. President Ed Newman called the meeting to order will all saying the pledge to the flag and singing "God Bless America."
A prayer was given by Irene Conny titled "God Bless You Everywhere." Conny also deserves credit for the decorative Halloween-themed tablecloths, napkins, floral centerpieces, pumpkins, witches, and candles for the party.
Judges for the Halloween costumes were Thelma Hilliker and Fran Smith, who chose Mary Ann Seibert as the prettiest, Dorothy Miniri as the funniest, and Joyce Snyder for the most original.
Lorrie Newman presented a few stories. Several members won prizes.
The Silver Creek Seniors reconvened Tuesday at the club rooms with 23 present. President Newman opened the meeting with the pledge and singing "God Bless America." Conny offered a prayer. President Newman presented a rather inspiring taped invocation about the elderly.
The Hole Parker drawing was won by Joan Suski. Stories were read by Lorrie Newman. Other prizes were won by Harry Suski, Fran Smith, Ed Newman and Marv Smith.
On Nov. 13 at 1 p.m., the club will hold a raffle. Tickets are three for $1. Mary Congdon is in charge of food.
On Nov. 20, the club will have a Thanksgiving dinner at noon, catered by Dolly. Joan Suski called Bingo. Jane Park was scheduled to go home Wednesday after recuperating from an accident.
Cassadaga, Stockton and Lily Dale Senior Citizens
CASSADAGA - The November meeting of the Cassadaga, Stockton and Lily Dale Senior Citizens will be held at the Cassadaga Country Club on Monday. The club's annual Thanksgiving dinner starts at noon for members and their guests.
