Brocton has half day of school Thursday
Brocton Central School will have a half day of school Thursday due to parent-teacher conferences. Kindergarten and first grades and sixth through 12th grades will be dismissed at 11 a.m. Second- through fifth-grades will be dismissed at noon. Conferences will be held from 5-7 p.m. for kindergarten through fifth grades and 6-8 p.m. for sixth through 12th grades.
Midweek Vespers to have Pot Luck Worship
Hurlbut Community Church in Chautauqua Institution will feature present Pot Luck Worship at its Midweek Vesper worship service Wednesday. The monthly family music and arts worship event will begin with a 5:30 p.m. pot luck dinner, with the service beginning at 6:15 p.m.
Vespers coordinator Bill Ward will host an open-mic style service, with worship contributions from community members. Music, poetry, scripture, and other worship art forms will be offered.
Persons wishing to contribute to the service may contact Ward at wardwill@gmail.com or by phone at 753-2800. Mid-week Vespers is a music and arts-based worship service with a minimum of spoken word. It is presented one Wednesday a month in Hurlbut Church, Pratt at Scott avenues, Chautauqua.
Blood drive Wednesday
The Sheridan Memorial Field Association will sponsor a Red Cross blood drive on Wednesday from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Sheridan VFW Post 6390, Route 20, Sheridan. Blood donations are very much appreciated. Those at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 lbs., and are healthy are eligible to donate. Walk-ins are welcome. Cathy Young to appear on Senior Report
Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Cathy Young as the guest on Saturday's television program. Young is the senator for the New York State 57th district. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.
The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the program devoted to the featured guest.
Free diabetic seminar at the Valley Pharmacy
The Valley Pharmacy, at 31 W. Main St. in Gowanda, will hold a free diabetic seminar at 1 p.m. Thursday. Registered Dietician Robin Schenk and Family Nurse Practitioner Lauralee Sprague of the TLC Health Network will share their expertise on the proper diabetic diet and clear up confusion about carbohydrates.
Also present will be Becky Dudley from Cornell University's Cooperative Extension. She will offer healthy eating ideas to the audience. Brochures will be available from the Catt-araugus County Health Department. There will be light refreshments and glucometer giveaways. This seminar is sponsored jointly by the TLC Health Network and the Valley Pharmacy.
Ripley board to meet
A regular meeting of the Board of Education of the Ripley Central School District will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Distance Learning Room (Room 123), of Ripley Central School.
BMA chicken dinner postponed
The chicken dinner at the Blessed Mary Angela Social Hall Wednesday has been postponed and will be held in December at a date and time to be announced.
Pizza night to benefit Literacy Volunteers of Chautauqua County
Today from 4 to 8 p.m., 20 percent of the purchases at the Fredonia Pizza Hut in Dunkirk will be donated to Literacy Volunteers of America.
Those who have picked up a flyer can use the coupon on the bottom. Those who haven't received a flyer can still support the group. Simply inform the employee at time of purchase.
Snyder to be sworn in as Seneca president
Barry Snyder Sr. will be sworn in today as president of the Seneca Indian Nation. He was elected to a fifth two-year term in a six-way race Nov. 6.
His swearing-in is scheduled today at 11 a.m. at the western New York tribe's bingo hall at 11099 Route 5 in Irving.
Animal Clinic collects for Sandy pet victims
Dunkirk Animal Clinic is holding a collection drive for pet victims of Hurricane Sandy. Items like pet food, pet treats, feeding dishes, pet bedding, litter, litter pans, carriers and leashes are gratefully accepted. The truck with all the items on it leaves on Friday from the clinic.
