Here are some of the best - and worst - of the week:
BEST
HONORING VETERANS - A number of local organizations spent part of their weekend honoring area veterans, including current, retired and those who have died. Veterans Day is more than just a bank or school holiday. It's a day to salute those who protect our country and our way of life. We applaud those organizations and individuals who took the time to remember that.
LABOR AGREEMENT - Dunkirk Specialty Steel, LLC is an important business in our community. Today there are 236 members in the local steelworkers union. Although the details weren't announced, we were glad to hear that union workers were able to come to an agreement with parent company Universal Stainless & Alloy Products, Inc. for a new five-year agreement. We want to see unions and businesses work together for everyone's benefit.
HOLLYWOOD VISIT - Hollywood actress/singer/model Vanessa Williams and her mother Helen Tinch Williams made a visit to SUNY Fredonia last weekend to promote their new book "You Have No Idea." Helen, a Buffalo native, is a SUNY Fredonia alumnus, along with her husband Milton Williams. This is the second time Vanessa and her parents have visited locally in the last couple of years. Even though their visit was tied to a new book, we see it as a compliment when they come to visit. It's always a pleasure to hear from the family.
WORST
FORESTVILLE MEETINGS - Scheduling special Forestville Village Board meetings has become complicated for no reason. The OBSERVER has received notifications of meetings without times. We've received notifications of meetings without stating what will be discussed. We publish those meeting announcements as a courtesy for the general public. Now we find out even some officials aren't aware of the meetings before we publish them. Trustee Linda Aures said she learned about this past week's meeting after seeing the notice in the OBSERVER. Scheduling special meetings shouldn't be this difficult. And they should never be scheduled without informing all elected officials first.
