Twenty years ago - 1992
On Sunday, Nov. 15, the Forestville Baptist Church celebrated its 175th anniversary. It was on that date back in 1817 that the Baptist Brethren of Hanover met at the home of Brother James Bennett for the purpose of uniting in church fellowship, called the Second Baptist Church of Hanover. Mr. Bennett, who started out as one of its first two deacons, went on to become the first ordained Baptist preacher in Forestville and the church pastor.
Thirty years ago - 1982
The Whoozit Card Club of Fredonia celebrated its 50th anniversary with lunch at the White Inn followed by dessert and cards at the home of Mrs. Pauline Smith. The event was hosted by Mrs. Luella Peting. The club, begun in Laona by Louise Conti and Dorothy Metzler Phife, meets the first Thursday of the month at the homes of the members, where dessert is served and cards played.
Forty years ago - 1972
MacKenzie's Card and Gift Shop is beginning its formal grand opening today at 148 East Fourth St., Dunkirk. The store is owned and operated by Mrs. Mary MacKenzie.
Fifty years ago - 1962
Henry Schweyen, who has retired after 50 years service with the Fred Koch Brewery in Dunkirk, mostly as a truck driver, was honored at a party held at the Fourth Ward Falcon Club.
