The Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders held its third annual Stroke Awareness Walk recently. The event was well received by the Western New York community with 168 participants.
The goal of the Stroke Awareness Walk was to promote community awareness of stroke, stroke prevention and the possible deficits resulting from a stroke. Additionally, the walk was intended to make the public and medical professionals aware of the various services available at the Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders.

The Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders held its third annual Stroke Awareness Walk this fall.
The Youngerman Center is an outpatient speech, language, and hearing clinic operated by the Department of Communication Disorders & Sciences at SUNY Fredonia. The center offers a full range of diagnostic and treatment services to children and adults in the surrounding communities, as well as college students, faculty and staff.
Among the areas treated at the center are articulation, voice, stuttering, language, auditory processing, accent reduction, hearing loss, and neurological disorders such as head injury, stroke and swallowing.
Free hearing screenings, educational handouts and informational brochures from the center were offered to participants and members of the community at the event.
The stroke awareness walk was organized by Julie Williams, Coordinator of the Stroke/Head Injury Support Group with the assistance of faculty and staff from the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences and graduate students from the CDS department.
Faculty, professional staff and students from SUNY Fredonia also participated in the walk which covered over two miles along Central Avenue and the SUNY Fredonia campus.
