A decision to pay to replace windows at the Barker Library has been tabled until members of the Fredonia village board have had a chance to investigate the conditions of the current windows.
"Is the problem just that they're fogging up?" Trustee Adam Brown asked Mayor Stephen Keefe about the windows at a workshop meeting Monday night.
Keefe said the windows become coated with steam and moisture is allowed to enter the library, which has damaged books and walls. The double-paned glass is not broken, Keefe explained, but damage around the frame has been causing problems.

In October, library representatives obtained an estimate to replace four east-facing windows believed to cause problems. A quote from Fredonia Glass Service, LLC was given to the board to review. A single 55 inch by 57 inch window would cost $481 to replace, but to do four, each would cost $445 per unit, which includes "glass, labor and materials" according to the estimate.
The total cost for four windows is $1,780, which Village Administrator Rick St. George said would be taken from the $7,000 originally slated in the 2012 budget for historical buildings. "There would be about $4,000 left after this is paid," he explained.
Because the glass is intact, questions centered on the condition of the frames and whether or not the frames would also be replaced or repaired. "It just says glass," Trustee Janel Subjack noted.
Brown asked Department of Public Works Supervisor Jack Boland if he had seen the condition of the windows. Boland stated he was not aware of the condition of the windows. Boland and Brown decided to take a look at the windows to determine the extent of the damage before a resolution would be approved. The pending resolution was tabled until a later meeting.
