PERSIA - The town of Persia approved a budget totaling $249,790 at its monthly board meeting. The budget saw no significant changes from last year with the tax rate increasing slightly.
The tax levy is $130,818 and the tax rate for residents in the town is 2.68 per 1,000 and 7.76 per 1,000 for residents outside the town. The tax rate has increased three cents for town residents and 17 cents for residents outside the town.
The town broke out the court clerk's pay from the justice department. Before passing the annual budget, the town held a public hearing which saw no public comment. The budget was passed unanimously by board members.

The town assessor Mary Bailey announced that $13,001,411 will be kept off the town tax roll due to exemptions. The exemptions are broken down as follows: war vet, $376,463; combat vet, $869,297; disabled vet, $202,131; Cold War vet, $58,725; ag buildings, $45,000; ag land, $235,567; and senior citizen, $664,535.
The town also approved paying $250 for website set up and $150 per year to Southern Tier West for the town's website. Highway Superintendent Dan Ackley announced there will be no highway maintenance from 10229 Forty Road down to the state land from Nov. 1 to April 1.
