The Chautauqua County Health Department is reminding Village of Fredonia water customers that a boil water order remains in effect until further notice. The problems with the village's water treatment plant have not yet been resolved. Water leaving the treatment plant does not yet meet State Health Department standards, therefore it is not considered safe to drink without boiling.
All water used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and food preparation must be boiled prior to use. Bring the water to a rolling boil, let it boil for one minute, then cool before using, or use bottled water certified by New York State Department of Health.
Customers are also being asked to conserve water. The following is a list of steps that you can take to conserve water: limit the number and length of showers; avoid doing laundry, use laundromats in neighboring communities if at all possible; use paper plates, cups and plastic silverware to avoid the need to wash dishes; turn off all running faucets that are being kept on to prevent pipes from freezing, use heat tape instead; repair or shut off all running toilets and leaking faucets.
