BROCTON - The Brocton Lady Bulldogs kicked off their season with an impressive 42-24 victory over Cattaraugus-Little Valley on Monday in girls non-league high school basketball.

Jess Merle had nine points and 12 rebounds to lead the way for the Lady Bulldogs. Brocton outrebounded the Lady Timberwolves, 35-22.

Kelsey Gerholdt had a big game for the winners with six points and eight rebounds.

"I had no idea how they were going to play," Brocton coach Ken Purcell said of his team. "I talked about having more depth and that showed in scoring tonight. All but two players scored. We played very well for the most part. We have to clean up the fouls."

The home team jumped out to a 10-1 lead after the first quarter and held a 21-7 halftime advantage.

Brocton returns to action Wednesday when it travels to Westfield.
