Waterline expansion was on the mind of the Dunkirk Town Board at its workshop Tuesday night.
Town Supervisor Richard Purol reported having talks with the city of Dunkirk, the Town of Sheridan and the village of Silver Creek about running a 12-inch line along Route 5 to Silver Creek.
He said this would be good for the town because it would increase the size of the waterline and provide water service to residents who previously did not have it.
"Right now there are some empty spots ... We are looking at putting in a 12-inch line all the way to Silver Creek. What's in the town now is an 8-inch line," he explained.
The process begins with each of the four municipalities chipping in $974 each for an engineering study by Nussbaumer & Clarke Inc.
The board seemed favorable to the idea but will not take action until its regular meeting on Dec. 18.
"It's good news to hear that Silver Creek is looking into this stuff. It's good for this whole area," Councilman Juan Pagan added.
Purol said he had also been in contact with Pomfret and Portland about a water line on the westside of the town. He said the towns are looking into the costs of 8-inch or 12-inch lines, however the process is in a preliminary stage and costs are not yet apparent.
Purol said these projects are tied with the Chadwick Bay Regional Development Corporation's mission.
"I just want the board to know we are looking into this stuff. We are still probably going to be tied in with the Chadwick Bay but we can't wait around. We've got to get water and it's not going to get any cheaper so we may as well look into this," Purol said.
CBRDC will meet Dec. 13 at the Shorewood Country Club. The Town Board will meet Dec. 18.
