50-Plus Seniors
COLLINS - This will be both a busy and a fun week for the 50-Plus Seniors at L. K. Painter Community Center in Collins as the end of this year's activities approaches.
Thursday and Friday will be particularly busy as the annual Christmas Luncheon is being held this Thursday with toy wrapping for the Gowanda Lions Club ending the week's activities on Friday. This Monday is the final day to make reservations for the annual luncheon Christmas party to be held at noon Thursday.
Normally the Christmas party is of the pot-luck variety but this year is different in that the senior program is providing pizza and salad so a head count is needed in order to have adequate food, thus the requirement for advance reservations.
Reservations can be made by calling 532-2507 no later than Monday and also can be made by signing up in the Senior Room during regular program hours up until Monday. Desserts would be appreciated and those willing to donate are asked to indicate this when signing up. Participants are also asked to donate an unwrapped Christmas item to be used as prizes at the Christmas Bingo game to follow lunch.
Friday hopefully will find many volunteer senior "elves" hard at work at 10 a.m. in the gymnasium of the center. The 50-Plus Senior Program has for many years assisted the Gowanda Lions Club in the task of wrapping all those toys that will soon find their way to needy children in the area. People of all ages may help in this worthy venture, as the old adage proclaims, many hands make light work, and the sooner the work is completed, the quicker the workers get to eat the luncheon awaiting them in the Senior Room.
Other activities for the week are: Indoor Walking and Exercises led by Pat Tucker, 9 a.m., gymnasium, Monday and Wednesday; Informal Euchre Game, 1 p.m. Monday, Senior Room; Gentle Arthritis Exercises, 10 a.m. Tuesday, gym; Quilting with Florence, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Collins Public Library Community Room (call Florence Reynolds, 532-3075, to learn more); Open Crafts with Pat Tucker, 1 p.m. Wednesday, Senior Room; and Senior Bowling, 1 p.m. Wednesday, K & L Lanes, Gowanda. Cost is $1.75 per game or three games for $5.
Thursday's Arthritis Exercises are canceled due to the Senior Christmas Luncheon and Party starting at noon in the gymnasium. On Friday, there is no Indoor Walking and Exercise Program due to toy wrapping for the Gowanda Lions Club.
Grape Belt Seniors
The Grape Belt Senior 9 a.m. exercise class will not be meeting today or on Monday, Dec. 24.
On Monday, Dec. 10, there will be a special luncheon for paid members of the Grape Belt Seniors. Reservations are required.
The book group meets the first Wednesday of the month and Readers' Theatre meets the second Wednesday of the month. New members are always welcome to join any of the activities.
The next board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 10:15 a.m. Three new board members were recently elected. They are Carol Goodman, Janet Jagoda and Cheryl Sheedy. The board, as well as the rest of the members, work hard to make the center an active and exciting place to spend time.
Lake Shore Senior Citizens
Lake Shore Senior Citizens met at the Dunkirk Senior Center on Dec. 5. President Barb Barberich led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of "God Bless America." A reading titled "Just Around the Bend" was given by Chaplain Loretta Hemink.
The minutes from the previous meeting were read by Hemink. They were accepted as read by Charlene Hallmark with a second by Ronnie Ginley. The treasurer's report was read by Treasurer Carol Kozlowski It was accepted as read by Jean Kubera with a second by Sandy Tapasto.
Attendance prizes were won by Tapasto, first prize; Ginley, second prize; and Kubera, third prize. Helper of the day was Stella Michalak, and others assisted.
The kitchen committee for Dec. 12 is Kozlowski and Sophia Kubasik. A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Hemink.
Officers were elected. Members elected are as follows: Michalak, president; Irene Christopher, vice president; Hemink, secretary; and Betty Korzeniewski, treasurer.
There will be a Christmas party at the Senior Center on Dec. 13, with Bobbie Shaw, at 11:30 a.m.
Mr. Carmel Social Club
Mt. Carmel Social Club held a meeting on Wednesday. President Carm Tampio opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. A prayer, "A Bundle of Christmas Wishes," was read by Carm Morabito. Josie Crino called roll with 37 members present. The minutes were read by Sue Borowski and were accepted. Birthdays and anniversaries were announced. "Happy Birthday" was sung and then applause was given for Tony and Marie Sack for their 60th anniversary.
The treasurer's report was given by Mel Bates and she also collected for reservations for the Christmas party to be held Dec. 19 at the Colony House at 1 p.m. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.
Financial Secretary Jeanette Mula gave her report and it was accepted.
Tampio gave a thank you to those on the committee for the installation luncheon.
Members of St. Rose of Lima explained the services they provide.
A Chinese auction was enjoyed by all. Bingo was also played. Refreshments for the next meeting will be provided by Vince and Carm Tampio. Diane Seegert and Dolores Trewiler will provide them for Jan. 2.
Pioneer Social Club
FORESTVILLE - The meeting was called to order by President Carol Pierce. The Pledge of Allegiance was lead by Barb Tower, and the prayer read by Norma Steward.
Roll call was taken by Secretary Judy Hahn with 31 members responding. The treasurer's report was given by Marlene Bradigan. There were no corrections or additions made to either report.
A moment of silence was held in remembrance of Dorothy Shadle, who had been one of the first members to help set up the Pioneer Social Club.
"Happy Birthday" was sung for December members Peg Heiden, Norma Stewart and Gertie Syper, as well as for Jane Penhollow whose birthday was in November.
Sunshine girl Peg Heiden sent out a get well card to Norma Youngburg and a sympathy card to Grace Hall with the death of her sister.
Angie Logan and Marjorie Hock were winners of the lunch tickets. Hall and Marion Ziecker were winners of the 50/50 prize, with Ruth Kuehn winning the Riles and Woolley Award.
All members were reminded to continue to cut out manufacturer's coupons for the military families. Another box of coupons has been sent out to Okinawa.
The club is still selling raffle tickets on the handcrafted stain glass mermaid, made and donated by Dorothy Schneider. The money collected will be given to a special and deserving student of FCS, who needs some extra help at this time of the year. Tickets may be purchased at the Evan's bank in Forestville, or from Schneider at 965-4830 and Judy Hahn at 965-4878.
The drawing will be held at the club's Christmas luncheon on Dec. 13. The luncheon is to be held at Tom's restaurant in Irving at 12:30 p.m.
A assortment of cookies, cakes, candy and desserts were enjoyed by all. Arlene Miller ended the meeting by reading a very humorous joke called "The $2 Bill."
The next meeting will be held on Jan. 7, 2013, with Wilma Crowell, Carol Dipirro, Hahn and Heiden providing the refreshments.
Silver Creek Seniors
SILVER CREEK - Silver Creek Seniors met Tuesday at 1 p.m. with 27 members attending. President Ed Newman led the meeting, with all saying the Pledge of Allegiance and singing "God Bless America." Chaplain Irene Conny presented a prayer, "The Greatest Gift, a Smile."
Lorrie Newman gave the financial report for October and November. It was accepted. Mary Ann Seibert gave the petty cash report, which was also accepted.
The Hole Parker drawing was won by Bud Anger. December birthdays were celebrated: Ernie Hilliker, Rose Falcone, Mary Congdon and Janice Snyder. The Suskis were thanked for the birthday cakes they provided. The 50/50 drawing was won by Anger, Conrad Pawlak and Joyce Snyder.
The food for Dec. 11 will be furnished by Dorothy Miniri and Janice Snyder.
Hilliker called Bingo.
On Dec. 18 at noon, the club will have a pot-luck lunch at the Route 5 senior center. All members are asked to help out.
