New NCCF fund evens the playing field for local children

December 9, 2012
The OBSERVER

Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation is pleased to announce a new fund established to benefit local children. Cheryl Tabone, owner of Pump It Up! Fitness, is on a mission to provide sports scholarships to youth in the local area. The Kids in Sports scholarship will provide funds to young athletes and their families for the purpose of helping those athletes successfully participate in the sports of their choice. According to Tabone, "Between costs for equipment, registration and even travel, many families simply cannot afford to allow their children to keep playing or even play at all."

KidsHealth.org, states that school-aged children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day, a quota that participating in sports can readily fulfill. The President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition also notes that joining sports teams also helps kids form and maintain positive friendships with others and develop a knowledge of and respect for proper sportsmanship.

A committee comprised of educators, counselors and community members will make recommendations for the Kids in Sports program. Both boys and girls are eligible and awards will be based on financial need and desire to participate.

If you are interested in financially supporting the Kids in Sports Scholarship, please contact the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation, 366-4892 or by e-mail at nccf@nccfoundation.org. The NCCF was incorporated in 1986 as a tax-exempt charitable organization. Since its establishment, the NCCF has distributed more than $8.7 million in the community through its various grant programs. It is an organization inherently committed to enriching the northern Chautauqua community and encouraging local philanthropy.
