Bringing city style to the city

December 10, 2012
By SHIRLEY PULAWSKI OBSERVER Staff Writer , The OBSERVER

Tylah DeJesus said she is looking to bring New York City style to Dunkirk on Saturday at the grand opening of NYStylez Boutique, which Tylah owns with her husband, Nicky.

The two purchased the existing barbershop in the front of the storefront at 404 Central Avenue, and decided to convert the rear of the building ito a boutique. The hardwood flooring is complemented by maroon and white walls, adorned with clothing, accessories and jewelry Tylah describes as "affordable." She says she wants to bring something special to the area and be able to appeal to shoppers interested in a variety of styles.

"This is a family store. I want everyone to feel comfortable when they come in," she said.

The couple have a special relationship with their wholesaler, who will sell clothing items to them by the piece instead of strictly in full runs of sizes. "I don't want someone to come in here and see 12 of the same dresses on one of my racks," Tylah said.

Tylah explained she will only purchase one dress of a style, and only a few items of less formal apparel.

"I want a girl to be able to come in here and buy a dress and feel special," she explained.

While she is from New York City, Tylah said she has lived in Dunkirk for 20 years and is proud of the community. "Central Avenue should be a focus for us. We should be proud of this."

They plan to bring in men's clothing and a ladies' stylist into the barber shop.

NY Stylez is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Gift certificates are being offered for the holidays.
