Mary D. Smagner, 88, of Dunkirk, NY died Sunday (Dec. 16, 2012) at UPMC-Hamot Hospital in Erie, Pa.
She was born on April 5, 1924 in Dunkirk, the daughter of Anthony and Mary (Garbacz) Stempien.
A lifelong Dunkirk resident, Mrs. Smagner was a retired employee of Brooks Memorial Hospital. She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Women's Army Corps.

Mrs. Smagner was a member of Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish - St. Hedwig's Church.
Surviving are her son, John A. Smagner of Dunkirk; three grandchildren, Dr. John P. Smagner of Chicago, Ill., Mark A. Smagner of Charlotte, N.C., and Jessica L. Smagner of Chicago, Ill.; her brother, Matthew (Donna) Stempien and her sister, Victoria Mackowiak, both of Dunkirk. Nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John J. Smagner; two brothers, Joseph Stempien and infant Jerome Stempien; and two sisters, Jane Hadys and Bernice Wojcinski.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012 at 10 a.m. in Blessed Mary Angela R.C. Parish-St. Hedwig's Church. Private interment will be in St. Hedwig's Cemetery. There will be no prior visitation. Arrangements by the Newman Funeral Home Inc.
