Here are some of the best - and worst - of the week:
BEST
WHITE CHRISTMAS - Sure this weekend's snowstorm is making holiday travel difficult, but it's the Christmas season. This is the time of year that we WANT snow. If we wanted a green Christmas (which is actually more brown than green), we'd just move down south. Enjoy the freshly fallen snow this holiday season.
REMEMBERING THE VICTIMS - Eight days ago was one of the worst school shootings in our nation's history. At least some of the area schools took a moment on Friday to remember the children who were killed by holding a moment of silence at 9:30 p.m. When there's a tragedy of this nature, there is little that we can do. But we can pray and we can remember those who lost their lives.
GIVING SPIRIT - Over the past month, we've run a number of photos and articles on individuals, businesses and organizations that have made significant donations to a number of charitable organizations in our area. There's actually too many to list on this page (which is a good thing!) So we want to say thank you to those who took the time to make a difference in our community by making sure children and families are given the opportunity to open presents and eat a good healthy meal this Christmas.
WORST
HOLIDAY PAY - We want to applaud the CSEA union at the County Home for offering some of the concessions they did. There were pay freezes, concessions sick leave, health insurance and more. We'll let County Executive Greg Edwards review the proposal to see what's best for county taxpayers as for the future of the home. But one thing that struck us was that currently all county CSEA workers are getting holiday pay for Good Friday and Election Day. Those aren't even federal holidays. All CSEA workers should be required to work Good Friday and Election Day, whether they're employed by the County Home or not.
