Twenty years ago - 1992

Brocton Central School will have a new principal beginning Feb. 5. Richard Thom, a Dunkirk native and graduate of Cardinal Mindszenty High School, was approved for the position at a special meeting of the Brocton School Board. Mr. Thom, 46, has agreed to take the job at Brocton for $48,000 per year. The son of Gordon and Florence Thom, 780 Park Ave., Dunkirk he served as a medic in Vietnam for 14 months and had previously been principal of a school near Binghamton.

Thirty years ago - 1982

The Fredonia Vanguard Senior Drum and Bugle Corps has announced two of their musical instructors for the 1983 season. Stephen J. Cooley of Dunkirk is brass instructor for the corps for the fourth consecutive year. Cas "Butch" Piglowski, with some 21 years of experience, is the drum instructor. The corps is sponsored by the Fredonia Fire Department.

Forty years ago - 1972

The Fredonia Kiwanis Club recently held its annual "Ladies Night" at the Holiday Inn. Guests of honor were Kiwanis Lt. Gov. L. Walter Schultze and Mrs. Schultze of Fredonia.

Fifty years ago - 1962

Pope John XXIII, 81-year-old head of the Roman Catholic Church, was named "Man of the Year" by Time Magazine.
