A front page photo shows quarterback Frank Reich celebrating with Mark Pike and Steve Christie after Christie's 32-year field goal in overtime completed the greatest comeback in NFL history - a 41-38 victory by the Bills in the AFC wild card game at Rich Stadium. The Bills rallied from a 35-3 deficit in order to move on to face the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road.
Thirty years ago - 1983
Princess Rachel Margaret Conti, the first baby born at Brooks Hospital in 1983, made her debut into the world at 9:01 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, weighing 6 pounds, 15 ounces - thus winning the "First Baby" contest co-sponsored by the OBSERVER and participating merchants. She is the second daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. (Rebecca Smith) Conti, 20 Lucas Ave., Dunkirk.

Jesse Thomas of Dunkirk High School nearly did it all as the Marauders basketball team survived a late scare to down Salamanca, 87-79, in a CCIAC contest.
Fifty years ago - 1963
Officials of the Fredonia Junior Chamber of Commerce announced the winners of their Christmas home lighting contest. First prize was won by Francis Leone, 21 Westerly Drive; second place was Mrs. Maxine Allessi, West Main Road and third place went to Douglas Manly, 35 Central Ave.
