Compeer Chautauqua announces its commemoration of National Mentoring Month with an evening of appreciation, inspiration and celebration of friendship, and a hopeful look ahead at new events and programs planned for 2013, sponsored by First Niagara Bank of Dunkirk.
Recent events in the news, many involving young people, have become a heartrendingly common occurrence that begs the question: what can be done to effect change in the communities? The Compeer Youth Mentoring program has for many years been engaged in being part of the supportive answer to the issues facing area young people, as an established friendship program serving adults and youth striving for better mental health.
All are invited to join in Thursday, Jan. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dunkirk Conference Center at 3602 Lake Shore Drive East in Dunkirk as Compeer celebrates the effect mentoring continues to have and discover what individuals and organizations can do to be a part of the change Compeer envisions so local children can live in safer, more aware and more responsive environments. The role of community members in this conversation is important and highly valued.
The keynote speaker will be Kenneth Houseknecht, Compeer mentor and executive director of the Erie County Mental Health Association. His topic will be "The Power of Friendship." Light refreshments made by Compeer Friends will be available.
Reservations for this event are recommended and can be made by calling Compeer Chautauqua at 487-2956 or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
