Brocton can’t stop Hamilton in loss

January 25, 2013
The OBSERVER

BROCTON - Jenae Hamliton's 23 points and 16 rebounds for Ellicottville (6-1, 8-4) proved too much for the Brocton Lady Bulldogs (2-5, 3-7), as the visitors claimed a 51-23 victory in CCAA Division 4 girls basketball action Thursday.

Brocton coach Ken Purcell noted that while his triangle-and-two defense might have held down Hamilton, it wasn't enough.

"We controlled Hamilton, but we couldn't stop her," Purcell said. "She had 12 points in the first half and 11 in the second half. I think we got a little tired playing our defense."

Madison Szpaicher added five points and four assists in a victorious effort.

Purcell said the Lady Bulldogs couldn't follow up on a competitive first half, mostly because of Ellicottville's advantage on the boards.

"We played a good first quarter and a decent first half," Purcell said. "In the second half, I think they started rebounding."

Jessica Putcher led Brocton with 10 points while Jessica Merle and Morgan Bennett each added nine rebounds in defeat.

Both teams will play Sherman next - Brocton on Monday and Ellicottville travels there Thursday.
