Here are some of the best - and worst - of the week:
DUNKIRK DAVE ATTENTION - Congratulations to Dunkirk Dave, the local groundhog hero, as well as his handler Bob Will for all the attention. The Weather Channel labeled Dunkirk Dave #4 of the "Groundhogs to watch." Be sure to visit www.observertoday.com later today to find out of he saw his shadow or if we're scheduled for an early spring.
SALUTING STUHLMILLER - Today has been proclaimed "Al Stuhlmiller Day" in Dunkirk by Mayor A.J. Dolce, remembering the late coach. Today would have been his 84th birthday. A Gowanda native, Stuhlmiller coached baseball for 28 years, leading the Marauders to three Division I baseball titles. He also coached Dunkirk's bowling team, and won a Division I title. A meet and greet will take place with Stuhlmiller's daughter, Rhonda McAnlis, at Rookie's on the Lake tonight at 7 o'clock.
LITTLE GIRL'S LEGACY - Blythe Nundy, the daughter of Lucy Schaack, who passed away more than 30 years ago from Lou Gehrig's disease, started a coin collection when she was just 4 years old, saving "shiny coins" in a glass jar. After her death, Mrs. Shaack and her husband David, donated the coins to the Historic Hollywood Theater in Gowanda. The coins are now on display in the Community Bank on West Main Street, Gowanda. For a $1 donation, people can now guess how many coins have been collected. The winner will receive $100. Also, the coins will later be put up for auction. Proceeds will go toward the Hollywood Theater's renovation.
CUOMO MISUNDERSTANDING - Gov. Andrew Cuomo's popularity has dropped from 74 percent to 59 percent. He thinks it's only because the public has a "misunderstanding" about the gun laws that was enacted. We're certain that has a lot to do with it. But it's not just the gun laws. It's how Cuomo is pushing for a raise in minimum wage and the negative impact that will have on businesses. It's how Cuomo is pushing for longer school days, yet they don't have a strong plan in place now for school budgets. It's how he keeps talking about abortion rights, yet abortion is already legal, so what is he hoping to accomplish? The public doesn't have a "misunderstanding" of Cuomo; it's Cuomo who seems to have a "misunderstanding" of what is his role should be as governor.
