Huskies take down Marauders

February 6, 2013
OBSERVER?Staff Report , The OBSERVER

The Dunkirk Marauders (4-6, 4-11) missed a few open shots early in the game, and it was all down hill from there.

The Olean Huskies jumped out to a 23-2 first-quarter lead and never looked back in a 69-29 victory Tuesday in CCAA Division 1 boys high school basketball action.

"We had a couple good looks and missed some early baskets," Dunkirk coach Jerome Moss lamented. "It seemed like we stopped playing after that. They are a good team. They just played ball."

The Huskies used their height advantage to force the Marauders into uncharacteristic shots, according to Moss.

"I thought instead of going at the basket, we were pulling up or rushing a shot we usually wouldn't and not going at them," he said. "It was the intimidation factor which led to what happened."

The Huskies held a 49-5 halftime lead, before letting up on the gas peddle as Dunkirk outscored the visitors, 24-20, in the second half.

Marquel Ruiz and Jacob Lockett were the leading scorers for Dunkirk with eight points each.

"It was a game you want to play hard, but for whatever reason, we were flat," Moss concluded. "The ball didn't go our way early and it took the wind out of our sails."

The Marauders will look to get back into the win column tonight when they travel to Falconer.
