CASSADAGA - The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy has recently promoted Sylvia Cross Swan, originally from Deferiet, to Social Development Director at the Academy. Swan has been employed by Job Corps for 16 years, and has also worked as a residential advisor, orientation specialist, recreation aide, substitute teacher, counselor and most recently as counseling manager.
As Social Develop-ment Director she will be responsible for the management and oversight of the Academy's Residential, Counsel-ing and Recreation departments. The three departments play a significant role in the development of social skills and critical independent living skills. Swan stated that "every day is different here, our students' growth and development is really what keeps driving me. Our beautiful campus provides a unique opportunity to focus on developing not only professionally but also personally."
Swan holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from SUNY Fredonia. She is a Certified Rape Crisis Counselor and Forensic Interviewer. In addition to her duties at the Academy Swan serves as the Secretary for the Board of Directors at the Child Advocacy Program of Chautauqua County. She owns and operates her own small business, Lasting Impressions as well. She resides in Fredonia with her husband and two daughters. Academy Director Ann Anderson remarked "Mrs. Swan" has been an integral part of this Academy for many years. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this challenging senior management position. I appreciate her attention to detail and passion for working with our students and staff".
The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy provides career technical training to over 400 students per year, helping to prepare young people to be successful in the workplace. Students who are also in need of a diploma are given the opportunity to earn a GED or high school diploma while enrolled. All students attend on a federal scholarship after being deemed eligible according to Job Corps guidelines.
