WESTFIELD - The YWCA Westfield is planning several upcoming events:
Tickets for the annual YWCA Child Services spaghetti dinner are now on sale. Pre-sale ticket prices remain at $7 for adults, $6 for seniors 60 and older and $5 for children under 10. The dinner is scheduled for Monday, March 18 at the Y, and seating is available from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. In addition to the full dinner, there will be auction items and a 50/50 raffle. Tickets may be purchased from any student enrolled in Y childcare programs or from the main office.
The YWCA announces that pre-school registration is now being accepted for the 2013-14 school year. The preschool classes are open to toddlers 2, 3 and 4 years old under the direction of lead teacher Terry MacCubbin. An open house is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15 at the First Presbyterian Church located on the corner of McClurg and Portage Streets. Registration forms will be available then and staff will be on hand to meet parents and students. For an early registration form or more information, contact YWCA Child Services Director Brenda Backus at 326-4012.
Women's fitness tour
The public is invited to the YWCA Westfield on Friday, March 22 at 6 p.m., for a free program on women's fitness. Nationally recognized leader Danny Russo will present a program aimed at helping women get stronger, firmer, healthier and happier.
"This seminar is a perfect match for the YWCA," Executive Director Katie Smith said. "Mr. Russo is a certified master trainer. He has worked as a consultant across the country and is especially focused on training women. There is no cost, no obligation. This is a free program. Just give us a call to register."
Classes at the YWCA
While the Monday evening tumbling class and the Zumba classes on Wednesdays and Saturdays remain in place, the Tuesday evening karate classes are on break.
"We're talking with some new instructors and exploring some additional martial arts classes," YWCA employee Michelle Warner said. "Anyone interested in marital arts is encouraged to call the Y and leave their name and number. Once our contracts are all in place we will schedule the classes."
Self defense for women
"A great learning experience."
"Easy techniques I can do."
"I especially liked the awareness level he created."
These are just a few of the comments after the initial women's self defense class held recently at the YWCA. The classes are scheduled to continue on a weekly basis. Students who attended the recent class will be contacted with the details. Others are encouraged to call the YWCA at 326-2011 for information.
There are still bedrooms for rent throughout the summer at the YWCA, and there are a variety of dates available for the assembly room, the gym, the small game room and the living room.
"Each of our rooms is air conditioned," facilities manager Nancy Tresler said. "We've added some additional furniture to our porch, and we're more than happy to work with our guests to accommodate any special requests. But we encourage people to make reservations as soon as possible."
For more details and reservations for room rentals, call the YWCA at 326-2011.
