Dunkirk: Benefits drive local costs

Does your employer pay you to take a lunch? How about cash for unused vacation time?

If you are missing out on these benefits, then maybe you should consider becoming a town of Dunkirk employee. This week, the Town Board added to an already generous package of salaries, health care and pension benefits to the employees by approving a paid lunch and cash for vacation time.

To those working in the private sector, those items are just too good to be true. But in the public sector - as usual - it is a different story.

One that ultimately increases the cost of government.
