LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Fredonia State completed a three-game sweep of southern California schools with an 11-5 women's lacrosse win Monday night over Occidental at Jack Kemp Stadium.
The Blue Devils (6-0) broke open a 2-2 game with six straight goals - three in the first half and three in the second. Rachael Reinis started the run with 7:59, followed by goals by Katie Kleine and Marissa Cussins for a 5-2 halftime lead.
Consecutive goals by Kaila Fox, Katie Glagolev and Cussins pushed the Fredonia State advantage to 8-2 before Occidental ended the six-goal run.
Reinis, Glagolev and Cussins closed out Fredonia State's scoring.
Cussins led the way with four goals while Glagolev had three, Reinis two and Kleine and Fox one each. Glagolev, Fox, and Erin Edson had one assist each. Jenna Cuddeback was credited with three ground balls.
Senior goalkeeper Casey Chiesa attained two career milestones. The win was her 40th as a collegian - she is the Fredonia State career leader in wins. She is second in career saves with 507, including eight on Monday. Sarah Wright is the career leader with 521.
Next up for the Blue Devils is their first SUNYAC game of the season at Oswego at 1 p.m., on Saturday.
Devils receive first 2013 votes in IWLCA poll
Fredonia State received votes in the ILWCA weekly poll for the first time this season
The Blue Devils, off to a 6-0 start, are listed among seven teams who failed to make the top 20, yet still received votes from the national pollsters in the Week 5 rankings released Tuesday.
Trinity (Conn.) is No. 1 with 12 first-place votes, followed by Salisbury, which received the other seven first-place votes.
Defending SUNYAC champ Cortland is No. 3 while Geneseo is No. 19 and Oneonta, like the Blue Devils, also received votes.
The next ILWCA poll will be released April 3.
The weekly NCAA stats are out and the Blue Devils are one of 18 undefeated Division III teams through Sunday. They were 5-0 at the time of the ranking prior to defeating Occidental on Monday to improve to 6-0.
In other team categories, the Blue Devils have caused 10.75 turnovers per game, ranked No. 46 nationally. They are also No. 51 in scoring defense with an average of 8.75 goals allowed per game.
Individually, several Blue Devils are ranked among 13 statistical categories in the weekly report. The two highest rankings belong to senior goalkeeper Casey Chiesa, who's No. 35 in goals against average (8.49) and No. 50 in save percentage (0.493).
The highest ranked field players are Katie Kleine, No. 57 in ground balls per game (4.25), and Marissa Cussins, No. 69 in goals per game (3.75).
Three scoring changes have been made from last Saturday's 13-10 win at Chapman. A goal has been credited to Kaila Fox which gave the Blue Devils a 10-5 lead. In addition, Rachael Reinis and Kleine were credited with assists on separate goals.
Devils take pair
WINTER HAVEN, FLA - The Fredonia State baseball team took a pair of games from Houghton College on Tuesday. The Devils won the first game, 5-4, in walk-off fashion before exploding for 18 hits to take the night cap, 10-4.
In the opener, the game was tied 4-all in the bottom of the seventh. John Bennett doubled to lead off the inning. He advanced to third on a groundout by Conner Lorenzo. Senior Jake Nowak was sent in to pinch hit and delivered with a line drive single to plate the winning run.
Lorenzo led the Blue Devils with two hits.
Kyle Grey threw the final four and a third innings allowing no runs, one hit and recorded a strikeout to pick up the win.
In game two the Blue Devils used a seven-run fifth to take control of the game. They went into the inning down 3-0. The first seven batters reached base and Bobby Frantz led the rally with a pair of doubles.
The Devils added three more runs in the sixth to seal the game.
Seven different Devils had two hits. Matt Casilio led the Devils with two hits, two runs and two runs batted in.
Zachary Jordon got the win with five strong innings of relief. He allowed four hits, one run, no walks, and a strikeout.
Fredonia State improves to 5-3 overall. Houghton falls to 3-8 overall.

Devils trim Oberlin in middle game of tripleheader
CLERMONT, Fla. - Fredonia State defeated Oberlin, 2-1, sandwiched between a pair of women's softball losses Tuesday.
The day began with a three-run top of the first inning in an eventual 6-4 loss to St. Olaf. After two were out, Katie Bartkowiak was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Cherise Gunnell. Alyssa Morgan and Jess Lauck followed with an RBI singles.
The Blue Devils left the bases loaded and stranded 11 overall. Their only other run came on a solo homer by Gunnell leading off the seventh inning, her second HR of the spring and second hit of the game. Megan Medina also had two hits.
All three Fredonia State pitchers saw duty. Danielle Shelp started and left in the fourth inning after two runs in the first and two-run homers in the third and fourth innings. Raela Wiley-Delp worked two scoreless innings of relief and Alyssa Brognano worked one.
The day ended with an 8-6 extra-inning loss to D'Youville.
Details of the Oberlin and D'Youville games were not available.
