Richard J. "Dick" Butts Sr., 86, of Fredonia passed away peacefully Monday, March 25, 2013, following a brief medical illness.
He was born September 17, 1926 in Buffalo, son of the late Frank and Julia (Barber) Butts.
Dick graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1944. He dedicated his life to helping others in so many ways. He was a WWII veteran serving in the US Army as a Criminal Investigator overseas.
Dick retired from the Village of Fredonia after 32 years as a professional firefighter. He also worked for 20 years at Klings Furniture Factory in Mayville as finishing floor supervisor.
His memberships included: Charter member of Fredonia Professional Firefighters Association (Local 2931); 65 years of dedicated service to the Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department, where he served in many capacities including Fire Chief. Also a Life Member of the M. M. Fenner Hose Co. #2, the Cassadaga Country Club, and the American Legion of Mayville and Avon Park, Florida. Mr. Butts liked to golf with his sons. He enjoyed collecting golf balls and other miscellaneous items.
Surviving are his children: Dan (Phyllis) Butts of Fredonia, Peggy Porter of Wilmington, NC, Crystal Butts of Jamestown, Richard Jr. (Cindy) Butts of Dunkirk, and Randy (Valerie) Butts of Fredonia; also ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren; a sister Shirley Shafer of Lexington, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Ardith R. Butts, whom he married October 12, 1951; and his three brothers, Frank, Robert, and Donald Butts.
Family will receive friends Thursday, March 28, 2013, from 6-7 p.m.at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, (679-9000), where a Memorial Service will follow at 7 p.m., with Pastor Allen Chase officiating.
