Isabel Cortes Echevarria, 76, of Dunkirk, went to be with the Lord, unexpectedly, Thursday April 11, 2013, with her family at her side at Brooks Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico, daughter of the late Bienvenido Cortes and Victoria Santiago.
A hardworking individual, Isabel worked many jobs throughout her life including Fredonia Central School and Dunkirk Public School.
She enjoyed many things in her life, among them cooking, her garden, shopping and most of all spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her memberships included St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church.
Surviving are her children Margarita (Paul) Di-Palma of Fredonia, Nilsa (Robert) Hernandez of Sheridan, Betty (Juan) Pagan of Dunkirk, Freddie (Carmen) Echevarria of Jacksonville, Fla., Mirna (Paul) Dimmer of Edgewood, MD., Ali (Peter) Licea of Middleburg, Fla., Nelson (Julie) Echevarria of Sheridan, sister of Altagracia Cortes Rosario, Miguel Cartes, Efrain Cortes, Hector Cortes, Jose Cortes, Blanca Lopez, 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Herminio Echevarria, who died July 18, 2008 and brother Guillermo Cortes.
Relatives and friends are welcome to call at the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home Inc., 56 East Doughty Street in Dunkirk on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church on 4th Street. Entombment will follow at the Assumption Mausoleum in St. Mary's Cemetery.
