The League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County invites the public to hear a report on campaign finance reform from Sally Robinson, president of the League of Women Voters of New York state, on May 2 at Shorewood Country Club.
Ever since the Supreme Court decision allowing corporations and unions to support candidates with unlimited funds, the influence of big money in elections has become overwhelming. This influence strikes at the very roots of our democracy: is it to be one person one vote or one dollar one vote? Robinson, an expert on the subject, will discuss efforts to curb campaign spending in New York state and will set forth possibilities of citizen action.
The occasion is the annual celebration of the League's contributions to the county. This year Margaret Larson will receive the Leaguer of the Year award and Pat Christina will be honored for her enduring service to the League and the community. The meeting will begin with a cash bar at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30. Reservations may be made by calling Judy Reynolds, 672-4283 or online at firstname.lastname@example.org. People who prefer to come after dinner to hear the speaker will be welcome to join the group at about 7:30 p.m.
