The eighth annual yard sale for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society will take place May 3, 4, and 5 at 233 W. Main St. in Fredonia. The sale will be held each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Item donations for the sale are needed and are gladly being accepted. Informational pamphlets and literature on multiple sclerosis and the National M.S. Society will also be available.
The yard sale is hosted by Brad's Bunch, a team that walks in the Northern Chautauqua Walk M.S. This year's walk takes place at Russell Joy Park in Fredonia on Sunday, May 19. The team hopes to raise $3,000 this year and is currently collecting pledges and recruiting team members and volunteers.
The seventh annual "Help Can M.S.!" pop can drive is also currently under way. Members of Team Eileen are currently collecting donations of redeemable pop cans and bottles, which may also be dropped off at the yard sale. Team Eileen will also be participating in this year's Walk M.S. To arrange pick up, please contact Eileen Kelley Baldridge at 679-8320.
Multiple Sclerosis interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with M.S., an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. The Western New York area has one of the highest prevalence rates of M.S. in the country, second only to Seattle, Wash. Multiple Sclerosis not only impacts the lives of those who are diagnosed, but also their family and caregivers. The average person living with M.S. will have an additional $35,000 per year in health care costs. These costs can exceed $2.2 million throughout the individual's lifespan.
All of the money raised from these events will be turned in at this year's walk and go to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. If people would like to sponsor Brad's Bunch or Team Eileen for this year's Walk M.S., they can send a check made payable to: The National M.S. Society, c/o Jenny Sullivan, 233 W. Main St., Fredonia, N.Y. 14063 (please note to which team you are donating funds). Monetary donations in any amount are appreciated and accepted and may also be brought to the yard sale. If there are any questions about these events or for information on how to donate items for the sale, contact Jenny Sullivan at 410-2724.
