da?Vinci 6 Silver Creek 4
BUFFALO - The No. 15 Silver Creek Black Knights (3-16) left the bases loaded with a chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh inning and lost 6-4 to the No. 2 Leonardo da Vinci Dragons (10-2) Monday in a Class C high school baseball prequarterfinal game.
"Da Vinci hit the ball with runners on base, Silver Creek didn't," Silver Creek coach Mike Janisch said. "Plain and simple. If you don't get the hits, you can't score the runs."
The Dragons drew first blood on the scoreboard after a Conor McGrath RBI double put da Vinci up, 1-0. Silver Creek took the lead in the top of the third as Tim Manning reached on an outfield error and scored on a Kraig Gilbert RBI triple. An Anthony Morales groundout scored Gilbert and gave the Black Knights a 2-1 advantage.
After da Vinci scored a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 4-2 lead, Silver Creek managed to cut the lead down to one in the top of the sixth. Stephen Marcey led off the inning with a single and he scored on a infield error.
The Black Knights scored one more run in the seventh before leaving three men on to end the game. Chris Gowan reached on an error and was replaced by pinch-runner Brad Rybak. A Zach Klisiewicz single scored Rybak and finished the game's scoring.
Morales threw the first five innings as Silver Creek's starter as he struck out one and walked one. Adam Klajbor came on in the sixth to close out the game. Klisiewicz went 2 for 4 to lead the Black Knight bats in a losing effort.
Aric Hallet earned the win for the Dragons after he threw six innings, struck out 10 and walked five. He switched positions with catcher Chris Ferril for the seventh inning and Ferril struck out the side to earn the save.
Leonardo da Vinci moves on to play No. 7 Maple Grove in a quarterfinal game Wednesday.
