Calling all amateur gardeners in Fredonia:
The No. Chautauqua Discoveries group, co-chaired by Margaret Valone and Mary Jane Starks, is planning to host an amateur gardener's contest in Fredonia for this year's spring/summer season to find the best gardens in the Village of Fredonia. All amateur gardeners, including children and families, that are residents of the Village of Fredonia are welcome and encouraged to participate. Show off some community spirit and those green thumbs.
Entry forms with requirements and rules for the contest will be available at the Fredonia Village Hall at the Water Department Office, The Fredonia Darwin R. Barker Library and at Fredonia Hardware Store on Main Street. Entry forms must be completed and mailed to Rosemary Mancuso, event chair, at 11 Pine Drive, Fredonia, N.Y. 14063 no later than June 30.
Contestants may submit entries in two different categories for this contest, flower gardens and/or vegetable gardens and prizes will be awarded to the winners in each. Participants may enter a garden in one or both categories. Gardens must be planted and maintained by the participants; professionally landscaped or maintained gardens are not eligible for participation.
Vegetable gardens must consist of a variety of at least six different vegetables. Herbs will be permitted, but will only count as one items in the requirement for variety. Flower gardens must include at least six varieties of flowering plants or shrubs.
Gardens will be judged by a panel chosen by N. Chautauqua Discoveries with flower gardens being judged on July 20 and 21, and vegetable gardens being judged on Aug. 24 and 25.
