SILVER CREEK As layoffs at Petri's Baking Products loom, the Department of Labor is taking action with an employment event later this week.
Area businesses received an email recently asking them to register to participate in the event which presents job openings to the soon-to-be displaced workers.
"We cordially invite you to participate in a job fair for the employees of Petri," the email said. "The facility will close around the end of May. We anticipate over 150 individuals may be affected by the closing of this facility."
This job fair is part of the DOL's and Chautauqua Work's strategy of targeted recruitment, where companies needing workers with similar skills can hire the Petri's workers directly.
"This job fair will showcase experienced job seekers that have been impacted by the closing of the bakery manufacturing business. Petri Bakery employees are highly trained and motivated employees who are dedicated to giving your company 110 percent effort in getting the job done. Some of the job titles that may be affected include: quality supervisor; production; oven operator; warehouse; engineering coordinator; sanitation worker; packer and several more," the email explained.
The job fair will be held Friday, May 31 and Petri's workers will attend right off the floor. The deadline was May 24 for businesses to register.
According to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice, this will be the first mass layoff with final closing of the plant set for August. The reason of the dislocation is listed as economic.
