RIVERHEAD, L.I. - The Fredonia 11-12-Year-Old softball all-star team pulled off a big upset Wednesday as they knocked off Islip, 5-2, Wednesday in the New York State Little League softball championship tournament.
Grace Pucciarelli was the winning pitcher as she gave up four hits, struck out three and walked as many.
Fredonia clinched the victory as it scored four runs in the second inning. Sydney Bigelow led off with a double and scored on a single by Grace Mroczka. Pucciarelli drove in Mroczka with a double of her own. Pucciarelli scored on a fielder's choice from Katie Price and Maggie Mignoli crossed home plate on a fielder's choice by Cassie Essek.
In the opening frame, Essek walked and scored on a RBI single from Kelsey Vianese to open the scoring.
Mroczka had two hits and Hannah Gullo had a double. Both players were also sound in the field. Shae Brown made a key catch in left field to stop an Islip rally.
"The girls played really well," Fredonia coach Joe Pucciarelli said. "We are hitting the ball. A win over Islip was an upset."
