U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will visit the Downtown Jamestown Farmers Market Friday. At her visit she will push for passage of the Senate Farm Bill, which includes priorities to help specialty crops, expand markets for farmers, and increase the availability of nutritious locally-grown food for consumers. Gillibrand will highlight provisions that provide more secure funding for critically important programs that support family farms, expand new farming opportunities, invest in the local agriculture economy, and assist consumers by improving access to healthy foods at direct and retail markets.
The Downtown Jamestown Farmers Market, currently in its 35th year, is operated by The Jamestown Renaissance Corporation. A primary goal of the market is to help farmers connect with a greater number of consumers of all socio-economic backgrounds, increasing the sale and consumption of locally-produced farm fresh foods through increased access to transportation, educational opportunities and a diversified promotion plan. The downtown market currently provides four high-quality produce farmers, including Abers Acres, Scott's Farm and Greenhouse, Small Meadows Farm and Busti Cider Mill.
Gillibrand is scheduled to speak Friday at 9:30 a.m. at 119-121 West Third St., Jamestown.
